COIMBATORE: Coimbatore corporation commissioner Katta Ravi Teja on Wednesday ordered suspension construction work on a sewage treatment plant (STP) near Chinnavedampatti lake.This decision was prompted by concerns raised by residents and farmers who have been protesting against the project. The corporation commissioner inspected the site and interacted with the residents of that area on Wednesday.During a public redressal meeting on Tuesday, around 50 residents submitted petitions to the commissioner objecting to the construction of the STP. One of their primary requests is to relocate STP to another site.During the commissioner’s inspection at the site on Wednesday, residents voiced their discontent, arguing that the STP should not be situated near the lake. They pointed out possible procedural errors in how the current site was chosen, claiming that the initial proposal was for a different location and that the choice to shift closer to the lake was made without adequate public consultation or rationale.Residents demanded that the corporation initiate an investigation into the site selection process and urge accountability for any officials involved if irregularities are discovered. They also raised doubts about the structural integrity of constructing an STP very close to the lake bund.During his interaction with the residents, commissioner Ravi Teja affirmed that construction would remain on hold until a thorough review of all relevant information regarding the project and its impact on the lake area is completed.
