Arunachal Pradesh is seeing a trend of reverse migration towards its bordering villages, state Assembly Speaker Pasang Dorjee Sona said in Tripura’s Agartala on Monday, crediting the Centre’s Vibrant Village Programme for the latest development.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of an executive committee meeting of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Indian Region Zone III, Sona, the committee’s chairperson, said his state, which shares a long border with China and Tibet, has recently seen a significant rise in reverse migration.
In the past, Sona said, people in bordering villages migrated in search of developed regions. The reverse migration trend, he said, was due to infrastructure development, better connectivity on the Indian side, and various facilities being provided through Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Vibrant Village Programme.

The presence of locals in bordering villages of Arunachal Pradesh is a “strategic asset”, Sona added. Sona represents the Mechukha Assembly constituency in Arunachal Pradesh’s Shi Yomi district, which is roughly 29 km away from the McMahon Line between India and the Tibetan region of China.
“My constituency shares a border with Tibet and China. Due to the unfriendly nature of the border there, some issues always arise. The borders there were neglected for a long time and lacked basic infrastructure, healthcare, education services etc which would prompt [villagers] to migrate. When borders are vacant, incursions are bound to happen,” the Arunachal Pradesh Speaker said.
Efforts to build double lanes in his constituency area and a heavy push to develop internet connectivity are expected to reap positive benefits for national security, he added
A total of 41 participants, including speakers, deputy speakers and secretaries from eight northeastern states are attending the two-day CPA meeting in Agartala. The next annual conference is scheduled to be held in Meghalaya’s Shillong in September this year.
