For many people, taking a day off comes with an unspoken expectation to stay productive. Whether it’s finishing household chores, meeting friends or planning an outing, many feel guilty if they spend the day doing nothing.

A Bengaluru woman believes that mindset needs to change. In a video shared on Instagram, she said that when someone is mentally exhausted, the best way to spend a day off may simply be resting without any plans or responsibilities.

Her Advice Is Simple

The video was posted by Tanya Arora, who spoke about why people should stop treating rest as laziness. She questioned the idea that a leave is wasted if it isn’t packed with activities.

“Taking a leave, lying in bed, and doing nothing at all is such a waste of a day off. If you think like that, you should rethink it. Bro, if you are mentally exhausted, you should specifically take a day off just to stare at the ceiling and do nothing. And the next day, when someone asks you in the office, ‘So, what did you do on your leave?’, just look them dead in the eye and say, ‘Nothing,’” she said.

According to Arora, rest doesn’t always have to mean travelling, shopping or ticking off a long to-do list. Sometimes, simply staying in bed, sleeping or taking a break from everyday responsibilities is exactly what the mind and body need.

Her message is likely to connect with many professionals who spend their weekdays juggling deadlines, meetings, long commutes and constant notifications. Even on weekends or holidays, many struggle to relax because they feel they should always be doing something useful.

Many People Agreed

The video received plenty of responses from users who said they could relate to her message. One person wrote, “Agreed. Sometimes, all you need is a day off just to sleep.” Another commented, “This is very true. Nothing beats a day off spent catching up on sleep.”

Some users joked that one day wasn’t enough to recover from work-related exhaustion. “I need at least a month’s leave,” one person wrote. Another added, “Honestly, I need at least a month off just to rest.”

Many others echoed similar thoughts, saying they often feel guilty for resting but agreed that taking time to do nothing can sometimes be the best way to recharge.
