A man in Bihar’s Kaimur allegedly killed his brother, sister-in-law and their two children, chopped their bodies into pieces and dumped the remains in suitcases and sacks, police said.
The case came to light after police recovered unidentified human body parts from two suitcases found beneath a river on May 10. Investigators initially suspected the remains belonged to three or four people. On May 12, police recovered more body parts packed inside two sacks near a canal close to Abhede village in Ramgarh.
During the investigation, police identified the victims as residents of Daharak village. When officers reached the house of victim Krishna Murari Gupta, they found the house locked and discovered that he, his wife Durgesh Kumari and their two children were missing.
Kaimur Superintendent of Police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which launched a probe with the help of the FSL team, biological experts and intelligence units. Police said no missing complaint matching the victims had initially been reported either in Kaimur or neighbouring districts.
Based on suspicion and technical evidence, police detained Krishna Murari Gupta’s younger brother, Vikas Gupta, for questioning. During interrogation, Vikas allegedly confessed to killing the family with the help of his younger brother Rahul alias Gautam, Maharashtra-based friend Deepak Kumar Rajput and other associates.
According to police, Vikas told investigators that tensions had been brewing within the family over family-related and financial issues. Police said he allegedly planned the murders while speaking with his friend Deepak Kumar Rajput in Maharashtra before returning to Bihar.
Police said the accused gathered inside a room at the family home on the morning of May 7. Krishna Murari Gupta reportedly entered the room while the accused were discussing share market investments. Investigators said the accused had already planned the attack and stabbed Krishna Murari Gupta after overpowering him.
Police further said Durgesh Kumari entered the room after hearing the commotion. When she allegedly tried to flee after seeing the attack, the accused caught and killed her as well. Later, when the couple’s two children returned home around noon, the accused allegedly murdered them too.
Investigators said the accused dismembered the bodies inside a room of the house, packed the remains into suitcases and sacks, and dumped them at different locations using a scooter. Police said the accused also tried to destroy evidence by cleaning the house, washing blood stains and using cement inside the room where the bodies were cut into pieces. However, forensic teams still recovered blood marks and other evidence from the spot.
Acting on Vikas Gupta’s disclosure, police recovered two severed heads, the knife allegedly used in the murders, a scooter, a country-made pistol, three cartridges and an iron weapon. Police said two heads were allegedly thrown into the river from a bridge, but search operations are still underway to recover them.
Police also said the accused had sent some family members, including women from the household, to their maternal homes a day before the murders. Deepak Kumar Rajput allegedly left for Maharashtra on the same day after the killings.
The SP said police have sent teams to different locations to arrest the remaining accused and will seek speedy trial and strict punishment in the case.
