What started as a regular conversation turned into something thought-provoking when a woman challenged her mother’s “patriarchal ideology” after she said, “Daughters are considered a burden on their parents.”
Their heated argument, which the content creator Khushi Rai later shared on Instagram, has ignited discussion around marriage, patriarchy and the expectations placed on married women.
It all began with the mother arguing that many modern daughters-in-law prefer to live separately or in nuclear families and do not wish to live with their in-laws. She questioned why sons should leave their parents after marriage, saying that daughters traditionally move into their husband’s home while sons stay to care for their parents.
“Maa Baap Ke Sar Par Betiyan Bojh Hoti Hai”
“Ladkiyon ke mummy papa hai, unlogo ke saath koi reh raha hai (Girls have parents too; is anyone living with them),” Khushi asked her mother. The conversation took a turn when the creator challenged the idea that daughters must leave their parents after marriage. She asked why daughters cannot continue to live with or support their own parents, just as sons are expected to.
Her mother argued, “Beta hota hai toh ek khwaish hoti hai meri bahu aayegi toh main aise sawarungi sajaungi (When someone has a son, they want their daughter-in-law to come to their home and dress her up).”
When the creator challenged her mother’s argument, saying, “So, the girl’s parents don’t have such wishes?”, she told her that daughters must get married and leave for her “real” home, which is her in-laws’ house.
The mother then remarked, “Maa baap ke sar par betiyan bojh hoti hai (Daughters are a burden on their parents),” explaining that parents worry until their daughters are married and settled into a proper home with their husband’s family. Shocked by the statement, Khushi immediately asked her mother, “Am I a burden to you?”
She then clarified that she meant parents remain concerned about their daughters’ future until they are married. The creator then asked why a girl must leave her parents, her home and her comfort for someone else when she can live alone with her husband. Her mother once again said that she must live with her in-laws and can leave if they do not get along.
The discussion also touched upon expectations surrounding motherhood, with Khushi telling her mother that she does not plan to have children. To which she strongly disagreed, leading to yet another round of arguments over personal choices, family responsibilities and societal expectations.
“Peak Rage Bait”
The clip has since gone viral, garnering over 2.3 million views, with social media users flooding the comments section with mixed opinions.
“BP high hogya mera ye sunke,” wrote a user.
Another person said, “Kudos to you for regulating ur nervous system with patient intelligence.”
“Peak rage bait,” an individual remarked.
“This is so triggering; you should just walk out & have a place of your own. Let your mother wait for her bahu and live with her,” someone shared.
“Oh God, their whole identity revolves around birthing a Son. It is somehow a sin if you have a daughter and no son??” said a different person.
Another individual suggested, “Sorry girl, you are going through such toxicity! No point arguing, doesn’t look like she is willing to understand your POV – move out, earn well and live free!”
