A Bengaluru woman has shared how a meeting arranged by her mother ended with her turning down a man who earned more than twice her salary. The meeting took an unexpected turn when he asked if she would leave her job after marriage.
The woman, who goes by Nandini M @your_niaaaa on X, said she was clear about wanting to remain financially independent and was not keen on marriage in the first place.
She Said She Would Not Give Up Her Job
Nandini shared that her mother had pushed her to meet the man a few months ago. She said he earned Rs 2 lakh a month, while she worked in IT and earned Rs 90,000.
She said the man lived with his parents, who depended on him financially. His married sister was also a homemaker and supposedly visited at times for gifts and financial help.
Nandini said she lives alone, has no dependents and few major responsibilities. She also described herself as someone who has always enjoyed being lazy and spends much of her free time in bed. She said she was not very interested in marriage, but agreed to meet him.
During their meeting, the man asked her, “Since you are a feminist, will you contribute 50 percent of the family expenses after marriage?” She said yes. He then asked, “Or will you leave your job and become a homemaker?”
She replied that she would do neither. The conversation then took another turn when he asked, “Why do women even need to be financially independent?”
Nandini said she was not offended by the question and was eating French fries at the time. She then asked him, “If you want a dependent wife, why not marry someone who actually wants to be a homemaker? Why are you trying to convince a working woman to become dependent on you?”
She Rejected Him While Eating Fries
According to Nandini, the man’s expression changed after her response. However, he then tried to convince her to marry him. He asked, “So you are rejecting me?”
Nandini replied, “Yes. You deserve better. I am a feminist and I like being independent.”
She then finished her food, paid her half of the bill and left. Her mother was upset and did not speak to her for two weeks. Nandini said things are fine between them now.
Few months back my mother emotionally blackmailed me into meeting a guy who earns more than twice my salary. He earns ₹2 lakh a month. I work in IT and earn ₹90K.

Your response to him was absolutely hilarious—I could almost picture your expressions as I read it. A user said, “Love leaves back door when money comes in. Asking u to leave job and be a homemaker is not right, but if u want to live life independently why even trying to marry someone. Ask your mom not to force you. Marriage should not be a social responsibility, it’s about a family,”
Another commented, “I was judging you in the first half but your perspective is fair in the end. If people want a home maker then they should look for 1. Why convince an independent person to surrender their wings and sit at home”
Others simply wrote, “You did the right thing.” Another added, “ppl never change their mindset.”
