Silchar: The Assam state election commission has started preparation, updation and publication of electoral rolls for the first election to the Silchar municipal corporation, marking a significant milestone in the city’s transition to a full-fledged urban local body.The commission has notified the schedule for ward-wise preparation of electoral rolls for all 42 wards under the Assam Municipal Corporation Act, 2022. The transition from a municipal board to a municipal corporation came into full administrative effect in mid-2025.According to the notification issued on Saturday, draft electoral rolls will be published on June 29. Citizens may file claims and objections till July 6, while disposal of claims and objections will be completed by July 13. The final electoral rolls will be published on July 15.In preparation for the upcoming civic polls, a training programme for Registration Officers (ROs) was held at the old conference hall of the Cachar district commissioner’s office on Friday.District development commissioner Rajib Roy and election officer Masi Topno conducted the sessions, focusing on legal provisions, procedures and responsibilities related to electoral roll preparation.Officials urged residents to verify their names and details in the draft rolls once published and submit claims or objections within the stipulated period.
