Gurgaon: GMDA is planning a three-tier traffic system at Ambedkar Chowk by adding an underpass to the already-approved four-lane flyover. This will help segregate traffic flows, reduce congestion and ensure smoother movement at one of the city’s key junctions, officials said.The plan is to construct a nearly 900-metre-long flyover at a cost of Rs 38 crore. But instead of treating the flyover as a standalone project, the Authority has also incorporated an underpass into the overall intersection planning to accommodate growing traffic in the coming years.“The underpass will not be constructed immediately along with the flyover. However, GMDA has included its provision in the project design so that it can be taken up later without requiring major changes to the flyover or dismantling newly built infrastructure,” a GMDA official said.Once both structures are in place, the intersection could have three separate levels of traffic movement — an underpass, regular local traffic at the surface and the flyover above the junction. The exact alignment and traffic movement to be served by the future underpass will be finalised when the project is taken up.Ambedkar Chowk connects sectors 45, 46, 51 and 52 and serves as an important link between Ardee City Road and Sohna Road. The intersection also handles traffic from several densely populated residential areas, including Ardee City, South City-II, Malibu Town, Mayfield Garden, Nirvana Country, Sushant Lok-II and III, and sectors 45, 46, 50, 51, 52 and 57.With traffic from these neighbourhoods converging at the signal, commuters frequently face delays at the intersection, particularly during the morning and evening peak hours. The junction is also used by motorists travelling towards Sohna Road and Golf Course Extension Road.Under the proposed flyover plan, a four-lane structure will be constructed, which will allow through traffic travelling between Ardee City Road and Sohna Road to cross the intersection without stopping at the traffic signal. The proposed underpass, meanwhile, will cater to traffic between Netaji Subhash Marg and Golf Course Road.Vehicles making local turns or accessing the adjoining sectors will continue to use the roads at ground level. Two-lane service roads are proposed on both sides of the flyover to accommodate such local movement.GMDA CEO PC Meena said planning for the underpass at this stage would ensure that the infrastructure being built now does not come in the way of another grade separator in the future.The metropolitan authority has already invited tenders for the flyover, and it will be completed within 18 months once the work is started.Apart from the main elevated structure, the project includes construction of footpaths and pedestrian facilities, stormwater drainage, crash barriers, road signs and markings. Utilities falling within the construction area will also be shifted as part of the work.MCG councillor Kuldeep Yadav said the project was needed to address congestion at the intersection. “It will help decongest one of the busiest intersections in the area, improve travel time and make daily commuting safer and more convenient,” he said.
