Ahmedabad: In prohibition-bound Gujarat, seeking bribe from a man he suspected of being involved in smuggling liquor has landed an Ahmedabad rural constable in an anti-corruption case.Police said the complainant was not a bootlegger but occasionally travelled with his cousin, who was allegedly involved in the country liquor trade. D-staff policemen purportedly suspected him of being part of the operation and demanded Rs 12,000 a month. The ACB caught one of them allegedly accepting Rs 6,000 in marked currency on Tuesday.Acting on his complaint, the Anand ACB unit on Tuesday arrested Miturajsinh Chudasama, an unarmed constable attached to the D-staff of Vivekanandnagar police station in Ahmedabad rural.According to the ACB, he sought the monthly payment on behalf of himself and two other policemen to ensure that the illicit consignments moved without police interference. They allegedly sought Rs 4,000 for each of them.Chudasama had purportedly collected Rs 6,000 earlier and asked the complainant to pay the balance on Tuesday. The complainant instead approached the ACB and agreed to assist in a trap.The Anand ACB unit arranged the operation near Badodara crossroads on the Hathijan-Khatraj road in Daskroi. Officials said Chudasama reiterated the demand during a conversation with the complainant and accepted the marked currency.The ACB team apprehended the constable and recovered the money from his possession, officials said.The operation was carried out by the Anand ACB unit although the constable, his police station and the trap location are in Ahmedabad district. Officials did not specify why the Anand unit handled the case.The bureau registered a case against Chudasama under the Prevention of Corruption Act. It is investigating the alleged roles of the other two policemen and whether they made similar demands from others suspected of involvement in the illicit liquor trade.
