Chennai: An elderly couple suffered severe burn injuries after a domestic LPG gas cylinder caught fire inside their house in Pulianthope on Tuesday night.The victims — Devaraj, 74, a retired Chennai Corporation sanitary worker, and his wife Muniyammal, 70, a domestic helper — were admitted to KMC Hospital for treatment.Police said the couple lived alone at their residence on Kanniga Puram in Pulianthope. The incident occurred when Muniyammal opened the cooking gas cylinder and left it open for a while. When she attempted to light the stove, it triggered a fire.The flames quickly spread and engulfed both Muniyammal and Devaraj. Hearing their cries for help, neighbours rushed to the spot, extinguished the fire and shifted the couple to KMC Hospital.While Muniyammal suffered 80% burn injuries and was admitted to the intensive care unit, Devaraj suffered 65% burn injuries.Pulianthope police registered a case and launched an investigation into the fire accident.
