A divorce case involving a woman who received substantial settlements from two marriages has gone viral on social media, reigniting a heated debate about alimony laws, gender equality, and the way courts determine financial compensation during divorce proceedings.
According to the viral video, the woman received ₹20 lakh in alimony after her first divorce. However, the second marriage lasted only around 18 months before the couple decided to part ways.
The video is set in a courtroom, where a lawyer is seen sharing details of the woman, who is an engineer with a MBA degree. The lawyer shares how this woman got a previous settlement from her first divorce, amounting to Rs 20 lakh.
What caught public attention on social media was the financial demand made during the current divorce proceedings. Reportedly, the woman was seeking ₹12 crore in settlement, along with a BMW car and monthly maintenance of ₹5 lakh. While the court is said not to have approved the full demand, the woman was eventually awarded a one-time settlement of ₹4 crore.

The figures involved quickly turned the case into a social media talking point, with users outraged over the ask and the outcome.
Some users argued that the woman was simply exercising her legal rights. One user commented, “It’s not the mistake of such women; it’s actually the problem of old-school laws and judgments. Absolutely, when you’re asking for ₹12 crore, ask with confidence. It is your right.”
The discussion became even more intense as users questioned how a marriage lasting just 18 months could result in a multi-crore settlement. One comment that questioned traction asked, “18 months married, ₹12 crore ask. How does a court actually decide this? Is there a formula or is it up to the judge?”
The viral debate has therefore moved beyond this one case and evolved into a larger conversation about whether India’s alimony laws need modernisation and why India needs gender-neutral laws. While some believe existing laws are necessary to protect financially vulnerable spouses, others argue that changing social realities require a more balanced and gender-neutral approach.
