Prayagraj: Abaan, the 21-year-old youngest son of slain gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed, was buried beside his father’s grave at Kasari-Masari graveyard in Prayagraj on Saturday amid heavy police deployment and heightened security. His elder brothers Ali and Umar, who were brought from Jhansi and Lucknow jails after being granted parole by the Allahabad HC, carried the bier along with other family members.The burial took place after a tense build-up at the graveyard, where a large crowd had gathered. When Umar was brought to the cemetery around 4.30pm, a crowd estimated at 5,000-7,000 people became unruly and broke through police barricading. Police personnel moved in to control the situation and managed to restore order.More than 1,000 police personnel were deployed in and around the cemetery, while over 100 personnel were stationed near the police vehicles inside the premises. Elaborate security arrangements were made to prevent any untoward incident during the funeral.Abaan was buried next to Atiq’s grave. The same cemetery also has the graves of his grandfather Firoz Ahmed, uncle Ashraf and brother Asad. His mother, Shaista Parveen, has been absconding since 2023 and did not attend the funerals of Atiq or Asad.The HC had permitted Ali and Umar to attend Abaan’s funeral and meet family members for an hour. Arrangements for the meeting were made at a mosque adjoining the cemetery, where the two were scheduled to meet their aunt and brother Ahzam before being taken back to jail.Ali was brought from Jhansi jail under the escort of around 30 policemen after leaving for Prayagraj at about 9.30am. Umar was similarly brought from Lucknow under tight security. Police vehicles carrying both brothers were covered with curtains to prevent their faces from being seen.Abaan died in a road accident in Jhansi on Thursday morning while travelling to meet Ali, who is lodged in Jhansi jail. Abaan and his friend Sonu died in the accident, while three others were injured.The bodies of Abaan and Sonu were brought to Prayagraj from Jhansi in the same ambulance around 4am on Friday and taken to Hatwa village, where Abaan’s aunt lives. After Atiq’s house was demolished, Abaan had been staying there.
