Eight students studying in different colleges on the outskirts of Coimbatore city were arrested on Friday in a dacoity case registered in Madukkarai limits earlier this week.
Acting on a tip-off, investigators tracked the accused, and effected the arrest.
They had, together, attacked three employees of a private company who were standing in front of their house and watching football match on a mobile phone.
Armed with sharp weapons, four among the accused had roughed them up before calling in four other accomplices.
The accused had assaulted one of the inmates of the house and escaped with four mobile phones, one laptop, and a high-end wrist watch.
Based on a compliant lodged by the victims, Superintendent of Police Pavan Kumar formed a special team led by Perur DSP Suresh.
A team led by Rajendira Prasad, Inspector of Police, Madukkarai Police Station, cornered the accused at their hideout in a location near Madukkarai, and recovered the stolen properties.
The accused are Saran (20), Ashok (21), Santhosh Sri (19), Abhishek (18), Ajay (18), Harish (19), Kannan (20), and Nithish (19). The accused were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
The SP urged the public to share information anonymously on crimes and suspicious activities through NIZHAL, the QR code-based public safety initiative of the Coimbatore District Police.
Information could also be passed on to the Coimbatore District Police Control Room at 94981 81212 or through WhatsApp at 77081 00100. The identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential, the SP assured.
