Kalaburagi: Police shot and arrested a convicted prisoner, Santosh, who escaped from Kalaburagi Central Prison Monday night, after he allegedly attempted to attack officers during an arrest operation the outskirts of Kalaburagi city.Three convicts had escaped from the jail early Tuesday. Following the breakout, Kalaburagi city and district police, along with teams from Bidar and Yadgir, formed special inter-district squads to trace them.

Acting on credible information that Santosh was in the Kapanoor industrial area, police moved in to arrest him. When he allegedly tried to attack them and refused to surrender despite warning shots fired in the air, police shot him in the right leg in self-defence and took him into custody.Police commissioner Sharanappa SD told TOI that two police personnel were injured during the operation. The injured prisoner and the two officers have been admitted to GIMS Hospital in Kalaburagi.Following the incident, Sharanappa visited the hospital to inquire about the condition of the injured personnel and the prisoner.Sharanappa said, “Special police teams from Kalaburagi, Bidar and Yadgir districts were formed to apprehend the three escaped prisoners. Acting on credible information regarding Santosh’s whereabouts, police went to arrest him, but he attempted to attack the officers. Although the personnel initially fired warning shots into the air, he refused to surrender; consequently, he was shot in the right leg in self-defence. A search operation is under way for two other prisoners who escaped.”
