Mizoram, Assam to hold official-level border talks in Aizawl soon

Aizawl: Mizoram and Assam are likely to hold official-level talks in Aizawl soon to address the long-standing border dispute between the two neighbouring states, Mizoram home department officials said on Wednesday.Officials said they are in constant contact with Assam’s border protection and development department over the meeting. “We are expecting that there will be agreement on the date of the proposed talks soon,” one state home department official told TOI.The resumption of talks was delayed for several reasons, including the Assembly election held in April, the official said. “There has so far been no report of violation of status quo being agreed to be maintained by both the sides in the last round of talks,” he added. The last round of official-level talks was held on April 25 last year in Guwahati. Discussions focused on technical and administrative modalities along the 164.6-km shared boundary, as groundwork for subsequent ministerial-level negotiations. On April 25, 2025, both states agreed to maintain the status quo in disputed areas and to expedite responses to claims made by Mizoram.Mizoram claims 509 square miles of the Inner Line Reserved Forest delineated in 1875 under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873, as its legitimate boundary. Assam, meanwhile, cites a 1933 Survey of India map as its constitutional boundary.Since Aug 2021, the two states have held four rounds of ministerial-level talks, along with official-level negotiations and virtual meetings, to resolve the decades-old dispute.
