'Odisha ki garmi': Man tries to cook omelette in 44 degrees amid ongoing heatwave, leaves netizens shocked

India is currently going through an intense heatwave that has people hiding up in their abodes, experimenting with movies and trying online trends. Typically, netizens of other countries try experimenting with making desserts or heating up water in extreme cold and hot weather. Now, a man’s unusual experiment in the intense summer heat of Odisha has caught the attention of social media users. The post was shared on Instagram by user @life.is.foodie_ with the caption reading “Sambalpur at 44 degrees.” In the clip, the man can be seen standing on his terrace during the peak afternoon heat. He places a pan under direct sunlight, pours oil into it and gestures towards the sun, highlighting the intensity of the heat.He then cracks open two eggs into a glass, whisks them and pours the mixture into the pan. Within seconds, the edges of the omelette begin to fluff up, indicating it is cooking under the heat. “Odisha ki garmi,” says the text in the video.

Social media reactions

The man’s video invited mixed reactions online. While some users reacted to the video with amazement and humour, others were sceptical of the setup.“Hp Gas ki tension khatam,” quipped a user online.“Omelette is okay, I was thinking you might get fried,” said one, while another added. “Kolkata mein omelette overcooked ho jaata.”Some were suspicious about the intensity of the heat, enough to cook an omelette, writing: “Tell me honestly is it not a preheated tawa?” and writing, “I think the pan was already heated before making the omelette.”Others called the experiment practical and innovative, with remarks such as “Good use of solar energy.”

Heatwave in India

The summer of 2026 has seen temperatures soar sky high, even past 45 degrees Celsius in many parts of the country. Extreme conditions have been gripping northern, central, and western states, with severe heat alerts in places like Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. As many as 8,056 excess deaths can occur during a five-day intense heatwave in Uttar Pradesh, according to a study published on May 26, making it India’s most vulnerable state for heat-related fatalities. Moreover, with the nights being equally warm, the little window of relief has also disappeared, leaving behind agitated and unwell citizens. In this situation, videos like these not only serve as an alarm over the rising national and global temperatures but also remind people of just how much such high temperatures have been normalised over the years.
