In April 1961, deep in the frozen isolation of Antarctica, a young Soviet doctor faced a nightmare scenario. He was the only physician at a remote research station, and he had developed acute appendicitis.

His name was Leonid Rogozov, a 27-year-old surgeon stationed at Novolazarevskaya, a Soviet research base more than 1,000 kilometres from the nearest help. A severe snowstorm made evacuation impossible, and there were no other doctors on site.

Without treatment, a ruptured appendix could prove fatal.

Rogozov quickly realised there was only one person who could save him: himself.

On the night of April 30, 1961, he began one of the most extraordinary medical procedures in history. Lying in a semi-reclined position, he used a local anaesthetic to numb his abdomen. Two colleagues assisted by handing him instruments and holding a mirror and lamp, but neither had any medical training.

The operation was incredibly difficult. Working through a mirror made movements confusing, while fatigue and nausea repeatedly forced him to pause. At times, he had to stop for several minutes to regain strength.

“I worked without gloves. It was difficult to see,” Rogozov later recalled.

Despite the challenges, he carefully located and removed his infected appendix. During the procedure, he discovered signs that it was close to rupturing. Had he waited much longer, the outcome could have been disastrous.

The surgery lasted nearly two hours, though Rogozov spent days recovering while continuing to oversee medical care at the station. Remarkably, he was back to normal duties within weeks.

The story quickly spread around the world, turning Rogozov into a symbol of courage, skill and determination. More than six decades later, his self-operation remains one of the most remarkable feats in medical history.

Few people will ever face such a situation. Fewer still would have the knowledge and nerve to handle it. Yet in one of the most remote places on Earth, with no rescue possible and no surgeon available, Leonid Rogozov accomplished what seemed impossible—he performed life-saving surgery on himself and lived to tell the tale.
