Most engineering graduates aspire to land a high-paying job after graduating from a prestigious institute. But an IIT Delhi alumnus reportedly chose a completely different route, rejecting a ₹35 lakh per annum offer from a Japanese company to chase his dream of becoming an IPS officer.
The story of Archit Chandak was recently shared on X by a user named Vikas Alwys, who highlighted the officer’s unconventional career decision and his journey to cracking one of India’s toughest competitive examinations.
According to the viral post, Chandak hails from Nagpur and displayed academic excellence from a young age. In 2012, he reportedly emerged as the city topper in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), earning admission to IIT Delhi, where he completed his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering.
After graduating in 2016, Chandak allegedly received an attractive job offer worth ₹35 lakh per annum from a Japanese firm. Instead of accepting the corporate opportunity, he reportedly decided to dedicate himself entirely to preparing for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination.
His decision paid off two years later. In 2018, Chandak successfully cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination on his very first attempt, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 184. The achievement paved the way for his induction into the Indian Police Service.
The X post further claimed that Chandak initially served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in Nagpur and is currently posted as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Akola, Maharashtra.
Sharing his thoughts on Chandak’s decision, the user who posted the story wrote, “I want to say that life should always be in our control. See how confident he was that he could reject a ₹35 LPA job offer and prepare for something completely from scratch. Self-belief can do wonders.”
The post quickly attracted widespread attention, sparking a debate over career choices, ambition, and the purpose of higher education.
Many social media users admired Chandak’s commitment to pursuing his dream instead of opting for financial security. One user commented, “Success often comes from aligning your career with your purpose, not just chasing the highest salary.”
Another user questioned the decision, writing, “Then what’s the purpose of iit jee & beech when the goal is public services.”

A third user highlighted the risk involved in the career shift, saying, “It wasn’t just self-belief. It was also a willingness to take a calculated risk for a goal he truly believed in.”
Not everyone, however, agreed with the celebratory tone of the post. One commenter wrote, “Pls don’t make heros out of guys who just pass bureaucracy exams.The dont do it to serve people.They do it for power n prestige. Unless he does a remarkable job as a police officer.There’s nothing to celebrate about him.”
