Chinchwad resident loses ₹11L in piped gas bill fraud

Pune: A retired man, residing in Chinchwad, lost Rs 11.4 lakh in a piped gas bill fraud in April.The man had filed an online complaint application. After a preliminary investigation, a case was registered with the Chinchwad police on Saturday.An officer from the Chinchwad police said the man received a call from an unknown number in April. The caller told him that his piped gas bill for March was pending and sent him a link to payment.“After clicking the link, an ‘.APK’ file was downloaded onto his cellphone. The crooks gained access to his cellphone, and hereby his two bank accounts, including a pension account and a credit card linked to it,” the officer said.He said the accused made transactions worth Rs 11.4 lakh from the complainant’s bank accounts and duped him. “We have sought the details of the transactions from the bank,” he said.
