Lucknow: Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) is set for a major expansion, with plans for a 350-bed level-1 trauma centre and a 1,010-bed super-speciality hospital, along with new critical care and advanced treatment facilities, director Prof CM Singh said at the institute’s third convocation on Monday. The trauma centre will come up near its second campus at Shaheed Path, making it the second such facility in the state after KGMU. The state govt has allotted around 16,000 sq m of land for the project to ease pressure on KGMU’s trauma centre. To run the expanded facilities, the institute will require around 150 faculty members, 863 non-teaching staff, and 72 outsourcing staff. A 100-bed critical care centre is nearing completion to address the shortage of ICU beds, while hostels with a combined capacity of 888 beds are under construction. The institute plans to start liver and bone marrow transplant services this year. Infrastructure is ready and most equipment has arrived, and around 300 kidney transplants have already been performed.A Gamma Knife facility for advanced neurosurgery will be installed soon. The neurosciences centre has already carried out deep brain stimulation surgery for Parkinson’s disease and other complex procedures.Prof CM Singh said the expansion will improve patient care by ensuring timely treatment, reducing waiting periods, and easing the load on existing hospitals. He added that the new facilities will enable comprehensive treatment under one roof, reducing the need for referrals outside the state.
