The controversy surrounding the viral ‘Rs 370 Biryani’ incident has continued to spark conversations online, with public scrutiny extending beyond those initially involved. While the earlier backlash focused on comments made during a stand-up comedy show, another comedian has now come under criticism over an old performance clip that resurfaced on social media.

Comedian Madhur Virli is facing online backlash after users began sharing a video of one of his stand-up sets, which they described as insensitive and offensive. The clip has reignited discussions about the limits of comedy and whether certain subjects should be treated differently on stage.

The Biryani Controversy Drew National Attention

Before Virli’s name entered the discussion, attention had been centred on the ‘Rs 370 Biryani’ controversy.

The issue began after comedian Pranit More shared a clip from one of his stand-up performances featuring audience interaction with Himanshu Jangra, a 23-year-old web developer from Gurugram.

During the exchange, Jangra spoke about spending Rs 370 on biryani during a date. According to the clip, he expressed frustration when the woman later decided to leave. He then made remarks suggesting that he expected something in return because he had paid for the meal.

“Maine kaha 370 rupay lage hain, main wasool toh karunga,” he said.

The comments drew criticism online, with many users calling them misogynistic and entitled.

Following the backlash, both Jangra and More deactivated their Instagram accounts. Reports also stated that Jangra was dismissed from his role at Starvik Design, while More became the subject of a case registered by the Maharashtra Cyber Cell.

An Old Stand-Up Clip Resurfaced

Amid the ongoing discussions, social media users began sharing an older video of comedian Madhur Virli.

The clip allegedly shows Virli making a joke about rape, prompting criticism from users who argued that topics involving violence and trauma should not be used for humour.

A user wrote, “Meet Madhur Virli: Since when did rape jokes become normal? If you can’t make people laugh without joking about someone’s worst trauma, maybe comedy isn’t for you. Find an honest job instead of using pain and suffering for cheap laughs. What is even more disgusting is that the audience sitting there is laughing at this cheap comedy and there are likely some girls among them, too.”

The post was shared on X by the handle sachya2002.

Social Media Users Condemned The Remarks

Many people expressed anger and disappointment over the resurfaced clip.

“Shame on you Madhur Virli! Joking about rape? And the disgusting audience clapping. Humans prove that they’re the worst lot day by day,” a user wrote.

Another commented, “Please take cognizance of this insensitive ‘joke’ made on r@pe victims by this low life Madhur Virli.”

“What? This isn’t comedy, it’s desensitization masked as ‘art’. They mock the most horrific acts, call it ‘edgy’, and sell it as freedom of expression,” a different person said.

“When being cool becomes more important than being sensible. This is disgusting,” read another comment.

“Why does it seem like some people are actively trying to normalize rape by trivializing it across various media?” another user asked.
