The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has announced that it will move court on Monday challenging the recognition of the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, claiming that the decision is legally untenable.
Senior TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee said the party believes the recognition of the Opposition leader violates established parliamentary norms and will seek judicial intervention on the matter.
Speaking to reporters, Banerjee said the dispute relates to parliamentary affairs within the Assembly and maintained that the Opposition’s claim to the post lacks legal validity.
The development marks the latest flashpoint between the ruling TMC and the BJP in West Bengal, where political tensions have remained high following the change in the state’s political landscape.
During the interaction, Kalyan Banerjee also took a swipe at Ritabrata Banerjee, questioning his political credentials.
He said that although Ritabrata Banerjee had served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, he had never been involved in grassroots politics.
“Being a Rajya Sabha member is one thing, but grassroots politics is entirely different,” Kalyan Banerjee remarked, in an apparent criticism of Ritabrata Banerjee’s role in the ongoing political developments.
The TMC has not yet disclosed the specific legal grounds on which it intends to challenge the recognition of the Leader of the Opposition, but party leaders indicated that the petition will be filed before the appropriate court on Monday.
The move is expected to trigger a fresh legal and political battle over the functioning of the West Bengal Assembly and the status of the Opposition within the House.
