Weak traffic management and poor police deployment have triggered chaos on key Himachal tourist highways, leaving travellers stuck amid fights and heavy congestion.

What began as an ordinary hill getaway quickly spiralled into chaos after disturbing videos from the Chandigarh–Shimla and Chandigarh–Manali highways went viral on X, triggering outrage over collapsing traffic control and poor policing on two of North India’s busiest tourist routes.
The viral clips show shocking scenes unfolding in the middle of massive traffic jams, with groups of men openly fighting on crowded roads as vehicles remain stranded for hours. In several moments captured on camera, people can allegedly be seen assaulting each other in full public view while terrified travellers watch helplessly from inside their cars.
Even more alarming for many online viewers was the apparent absence of effective police control. In some clips circulating online, police personnel themselves appear to be getting attacked while attempting to intervene, raising serious concerns over law and order management during peak tourist movement towards Himachal Pradesh.
The videos, widely reshared across X and Instagram, have sparked debate around worsening civic behaviour, weak traffic enforcement, and growing safety concerns on popular hill routes used daily by thousands of tourists travelling towards Shimla, Manali, and nearby destinations.

Social media users were quick to react to the disturbing visuals. One user wrote, “Saari garmi raste mein hi nikaal di,” mocking how frustration from endless traffic jams appeared to explode into violence on the highway itself.
Another user commented, “There are two problems. First is civic sense. When there is a jam, people should wait instead of driving into the wrong lane and blocking traffic further. Second is poor policing and traffic management.”
Several viewers also questioned why there were no visible checkpoints, traffic diversions, patrol teams, or crowd-control measures despite these routes witnessing heavy tourist traffic every summer season.
A particularly viral comment read, “We should give civic sense licences before driving licences in India.”
Others highlighted the broader safety issue, warning that repeated scenes of fights, road rage, and unchecked congestion could damage the travel experience for tourists heading to Himachal Pradesh during peak holiday months.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the fragile traffic infrastructure on key hill highways, where long jams, reckless overtaking, poor lane discipline, and overcrowding often create dangerous situations during weekends and holiday rush periods.
As the videos continue circulating online, many travellers are now questioning whether enough is being done to manage safety and law enforcement on some of India’s most crowded tourist corridors.
