Hyderabad: As the Census-2027 houselisting operations progress across the state, officials have clarified that female enumerators will be accompanied by their male counterparts when visiting farmhouses on the outskirts of urban nodes. A decision to this effect was taken in light of concerns raised by women regarding their safety when approaching households in remote areas. As of May 25, just 3% of house listing blocks (HLB) was completed in Telangana. Overall, 62% of the enumeration work was completed. As part of the houselisting operations, enumerators would not only count families but also include institutions, buildings, and farmhouses, which will require visits for detailed assessment. “In areas like Moinabad and Medchal, there are several farmhouses located far from residential neighbourhoods. Some female enumerators have voiced concerns about visiting such locations. We informed district collectors to ensure that female enumerators are accompanied by their male colleagues in such situations,” a source said.In one incident, according to the source, a person was caught throwing stones at enumerators, leading to the filing of a first information report (FIR). However, it was later determined that the individual was unsound. In several cases, residents have hesitated to provide information due to confusion around multiple surveys being conducted by the state govt. “This issue is especially prevalent in urban areas. People are often reluctant to answer enumerators’ questions and frequently ask why they need to repeat details. After explaining that the individual data is completely secure and won’t be shared with anyone, a few are willing to provide their information,” the sources revealed. The sources indicated that the current situation has arisen due to two state-level surveys conducted in Telangana since the state’s formation. During the BRS regime, Samagra Kutumba Survey was carried out, while in 2025, the Congress govt conducted a caste survey. The latest Census is significant because it would be the first since the state’s formation in 2014.
