Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari takes oath as an MLA in the state assembly.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday announced that he will retain the Bhabanipur Assembly seat and will vacate the Nandigram seat.
Adhikari defeated former Chief Minister and TMC supremo in her home turf of Bhabanipur by over 15,000 votes, and secured Nandigram for three times in a row in the recently held assembly polls.
The Chief Minister said that although he would have to vacate one Assembly seat after taking oath from Bhabanipur, he would continue to closely monitor and work for the people of Nandigram.
“I have taken oath from Bhabanipur. As per the rules, I have to vacate one seat. However, I will continue to look after the Nandigram constituency. I will not let Nandigram feel that Suvendu Adhikari is no longer there. I will keep a close watch on everything. I have been overseeing it since the time of Firoza Bibi.” he said.

He asserted that the constituency would not feel his absence and said he had been looking after the area since the time of Firoza Bibi.
Today, Adhikari and other newly elected MLAs took oath in the Legislative Assembly after BJP’s historic win in the state. State Minister Dilip Ghosh also took the oath as an MLA of the Kharagpur Sadar assembly constituency.
Adhikari on Saturday took oath as the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal. The oath of office was administered by Governor RN Ravi at a grand swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers and senior BJP leaders.
Calling it the beginning of a new chapter for the state, Adhikari said the “Sonar Bangla” era had officially begun after the BJP’s sweeping victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
In a sweeping electoral mandate, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a decisive victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 207 seats- well past the two-thirds majority mark- and bringing an end to Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) 15-year rule.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC), which had won 212 seats in the last Assembly polls, finished a distant second with 80 seats and is leading in one constituency.
The majority mark in the 294-member House is 148. The result signals a decisive shift in the state’s political direction and ideological balance.
