A close associate of slain mafia don Atiq Ahmed has surrendered before a court in Prayagraj in connection with the Irfan Gaddi murder case, after being on the run for more than a month following the killing.

Asif Durrani had allegedly planned the murder of property dealer Irfan Gaddi, a close associate of Atiq’s brother Ashraf. The murder was carried out by four motorcycle-borne assailants on the evening of April 8 in the Ainuddinpur area of Prayagraj, according to police.

Durrani had been on the run since the murder. Police had also announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his arrest. Earlier, police had announced a reward of Rs 25,000 on him, but the amount was later doubled as he continued to evade arrest.

Police will now take him on remand and proceed with further legal action. Earlier, Asif’s brother Rashid Durrani was arrested in connection with the case.

In the Irfan Gaddi murder case, police have arrested six accused so far, while another accused, Nasir Jamal, is still absconding. Police had registered a case against the Durrani brothers and several others last month following a complaint filed by the victim’s family.
