Kanpur: Residents continued to reel under sultry conditions on Monday despite the mercury remaining almost stagnant. Very light drizzle was reported from the Meston Road area in the morning, followed by intermittent sunshine and cloud cover, which pushed up humidity levels.The city recorded a maximum temperature of 34.3°C, 0.3°C lower than Sunday’s maximum, while the minimum temperature stood at 26.8°C. The maximum relative humidity was recorded at 84%, resulting in uncomfortable and sultry weather conditions.Southeasterly winds blew at a speed of 5.1 to 9.8 kmph, providing some relief from the oppressive humidity.Kanpur and several other districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, Prayagraj, Meerut, Noida and the National Capital Region, are likely to see thunderstorms and heavy rain over the next 24 hours, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy downpours at isolated places in the Kanpur division.The IMD on Monday forecast light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, with heavy rainfall likely at isolated places in the Kanpur division between August 10 and 11. Increased moisture influx from the Bay of Bengal, coupled with active monsoon winds, is expected to keep skies cloudy across the division.According to the forecast, humid conditions will prevail during the day, while rainfall activity is likely to intensify during the night and morning hours.For Kanpur Nagar, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms and heavy rain during the afternoon and night, with the probability of rainfall reaching up to 95%.SN Sunil Pandey, weather expert at Chandra Shekhar Azad University, also said there was a strong possibility of cloudy skies, thunderstorms and rain in Kanpur Nagar over the next 24 hours. He said the sky was likely to remain overcast, with heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms expected during the afternoon or evening. The probability of rain has been estimated at between 72% and 100%.Pandey said atmospheric moisture and the development of new weather systems were likely to further increase moisture influx. As a result, the Kanpur division is expected to witness cloudy conditions from August 11 to 13, with intermittent strong winds and scattered light to moderate rainfall likely at isolated places.The weather activity may also be accompanied by gusty winds, thunderstorms and lightning, he added.
