Search operations for three coal mine workers, allegedly abducted by insurgents in the early hours of Sunday from near Phinbiro on the border of Assam’s Tinsukia district and Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district, continued in the two states on Monday.

The three men — Gyan Thapa, Lekhok Bora and Chandan Narzary, all from Assam — were reportedly taken away in a dumper truck to Arunachal Pradesh, towards Myanmar, the police said. SP, Tinsukia, Gaurav Abhijit Dilip said from the statements of eyewitnesses it has been inferred that the abductors were probably from ULFA. However, SP, Changlang, Kirli Padu said no group had claimed responsibility for the abduction, nor made any ransom demand yet.

On Sunday, intensive search operations were carried out jointly by the Arunachal police, the Assam police and the Army.

Parsuram, a relative of Gyan Thapa, said, “It’s been two days but we still don’t know why Gyan was picked up. He is an ordinary worker and the person who runs the mine is not a heavyweight either.” The second abducted miner, Bora, is also a resident of Tinsukia no details about the third miner, Narzary, have been ascertained yet, said the police.
