Noida: For straight eight days, around 4,000 residents of Sector 23 have gone without a supply of clean drinking water, with nearly 50 people complaining of diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach aches.Dhruve Gupta, a resident of the sector, said the actual number of people affected could be higher. “More than 50 families have flagged illnesses linked to contaminated water supply in the society’s social media chats. However, the actual number of people taken ill could well be above 200 since many might not have reported it or are facing milder symptoms,” Gupta said.So far, there was no data from the health department on the number of people affected.On Monday, a delegation of the local RWA met Pradeep Kumar, a senior manager at Noida Authority’s water department, only to be told that Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd workers had damaged sewer and water pipelines while digging to lay cables, which may have led to contamination.“We were told that repair work was already underway,” Gupta said. Till late Monday, the Authority’s workers fixed leakages at two or three points along the supply line, but residents claimed discoloured water continued to flow from taps.JK Sharma, general secretary of the residential sector, said the black, sewage-mixed water was flowing from the taps, especially at A-Block. Sharma, who met Noida Authority CEO and its water department general manager on Monday, said that “black to pale yellow” water was flowing from the taps and demanded a quality test.

The area has frequently faced low water pressure. In 2024 too, the sector grappled with poor tap water quality after mesh-like effluents choked a pipeline near the sector’s Block B.“The water supply lines for sectors 22 and 23 are the same. The pipeline in Sector 22 is old and corroded in places, which often leads to leakages and mixing of sewer and drinking water,” Sharma said, demanding a separate pipeline for Sector 23.
