After a 17-year-old intern was repeatedly asked to work on her leave days and even asked to come to the office on a Sunday without any prior discussion, she decided to hand in her resignation. Although her colleagues were generally “good people”, their behaviour over the past few days left her frustrated and overwhelmed, which ultimately led her to to resign for her mental peace and studies.

In a Reddit post, she mentioned that the issue began after she took a leave on a Saturday. She claimed that despite being on leave, she continued working on certain assigned tasks, including editing two reels and preparing a 10-image carousel. However, she was still questioned about her productivity.

In the screenshot that the 17-year-old girl, who worked as a social media marketing and management intern at a media agency, shared, a colleague asked her why she did not come to the office and said, “3-4 days se kuch bhi effective work nhi hua hai apna (For the last 3-4 days, we have not done any effective work)!!!!” The colleague also added, “Aur agar aapko aak leave leni thi toh bta dete raat me (And if you wanted to take leave today, you should have told us last night).”

The internet responded by pointing out that it was Sunday and listed the work she had completed, saying she had updated the team about everything and had even worked on content despite being on leave. In another screenshot, the colleague asked her if she considered those “effective work.”

She responded, “Saturday was a leave day, and despite that, I worked on the things mentioned above! So I genuinely want to understand what you mean by ‘effective work’ and what else you were expecting from me on a leave day??” Their conversation took a turn when the intern finally handed in her resignation, saying August 20th would be her last working day.

She further explained, “I woke up late today and found these msgs on my phone. I’m honestly so done with these people, isliye I finally RESIGNED! for the sake of my mental peace! Tho they’re good people in general! Pr nhi hora tha ab mujh se (I couldn’t do it anymore)!”

The post has since sparked a familiar debate about workplace boundaries, leave policies and whether employee should be expected to remain available on their days off.

“Indian work culture is so sad.. Even abroad, the worst bosses are Indian,” said a user.

“Indian work culture toxic, sick as hell. They will make you a robot and will make you a donkey,” wrote another.

“We need more people like you to take a strong position on work exploitation. I feel if more people speak out and act, then things will change. Congrats on the brave step and all the best for your future !” said a different person.

“Good thing Op making them realise that you’re human and have boundaries between personal and professional life. You can manage to do this until you reach the age where you think employment is necessary. The day you reach that age, you’ll change; don’t worry unless you’re from a financially independent family or have generational wealth,” someone else commented.
