Hrusikesh MohantyBerhampur: The accountant of a non-govt organisation here was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly misappropriating over Rs 30 lakh from the organisation from Nov 2025 to this month. He was identified as Rajeeb Kumar Sethy (35) of Golapalli Sahi.“Annual report of the organisation 2024-25, registration certificate, PAN card, bank accounts and some other documents were seized for proper verification and inquiry,” said Krushna Saha, IIC, Nimakhandi police station, on Thursday.Rajeeb was working in the organisation for several years as an accountant to maintain the daily transactions. The NGO works in social development, health, livelihood and irrigation sectors in Mohona and Dharakote blocks in Gajapati and Ganjam districts, respectively, for the last 26 years. The funds come from both the Central govt and foreign countries.“During the investigation, we came to know that the accused person dishonestly and fraudulently misappropriated the money of the NGO and he expended the money for his personal gain. He made duplicate signs of the secretary of the organisation in the bank cheque books to withdraw the money from the banks,” Saha said.When the secretary, Nagendra Kumar Nandi (69) of Nilanchal Nagar, and other members asked him about the mismatch of the expenditure and balance amounts, he could not reply satisfactorily.Nagendra lodged a complaint against Rajeeb on Wednesday, suspecting misappropriation of the money by putting his forged signature. Police said an inquiry is going on to find out if any other persons were involved.
