A fresh debate over artificial intelligence and job security erupted online after ClickUp cut nearly 22% of its workforce while reporting strong growth.

In a lengthy statement shared on X, Evans said the company was currently in its “strongest” position ever and insisted the layoffs were part of a larger restructuring strategy aimed at preparing ClickUp for the future of AI-powered work environments.

“Today we reduced headcount by 22%. The business is the strongest it’s ever been. So I think it’s important to be direct about what I’m seeing and why,” Evans wrote.

Taking personal responsibility for the decision, the CEO added, “First, I made this decision and I own it. I did it because the way to operate at the highest level of productivity is changing, and to win the future, ClickUp needs to change with it.”

Evans stressed that the layoffs were not intended as a cost-cutting measure. According to him, a large portion of the savings would instead be reinvested into employees who remain with the company. He also announced plans to introduce million-dollar salary bands for workers capable of delivering what he described as “100x impact” using AI systems.

The CEO’s post outlined his vision for what he called a “100x organization,” where AI fundamentally reshapes traditional job roles. He argued that the future workplace would rely heavily on highly skilled workers capable of orchestrating AI tools rather than performing conventional workflows.

“The future is not fewer people. It’s different work, new roles, and better rewards for those who embrace it,” he wrote.

The announcement quickly went viral online, with social media users expressing sharply divided opinions about the company’s AI-first strategy and the layoffs.

One user criticised Evans’ remarks on research and customer understanding, writing, “The bottleneck of user research is gone. It takes us just one mention of an agent to kickoff research and analyze results. This is a sure fire way to ignore the most important part of your business, the customer.”

Another user took a jab at the company’s software performance, commenting, “Will firing people make the product not be molasses slow?”

Some users, however, agreed with the broader direction Evans described. “It’s still early but I’ve rebuilt my workflow around AI handling the system so I can stay in front of customers. My hunch is teams layering AI on top of pre-2026 processes won’t feel it until the gap is too wide to close,” one person wrote.

Another comment supporting the move read, “While layoffs can be a difficult decision, I agree with the premise that work needs to be rethought. Redefining the roles and work people are doing, in my experience leading AI transformation, is the only way to see large gains with AI.”

A fifth user suggested that although the strategy may appear drastic now, it could become increasingly common in the future. “This sounds extreme right now, but I think many companies will eventually face this shift. Big bet by ClickUp, risky too. But probably closer to the future than most people want to admit…” the user wrote.
