Mumbai: Transport minister Pratap Sarnaik on Thursday announced that it will be mandatory for all vehicles, registered before April 2019, to install High Security Registration Number (HSRP) plates from July 1.The earlier deadline was Dec 31, 2025. However, after reviewing the progress of HSRP installation across the state, the deadline was extended to June 30, 2026, to avoid inconvenience to vehicle owners, said Sarnaik.Sources said over a crore vehicles have applied for HSRP, of which 93 lakh vehicles have been fitted with the number plate.He said, “HSRP is an extremely important mechanism to prevent vehicle theft, fake number plates and misuse of vehicles in criminal activities. As per the Central Govt’s guidelines, installation of HSRP plates has been made compulsory for old vehicles in the state as well. Therefore, all vehicle owners should take advantage of the extended deadline and get HSRP installed in time.”Vehicle owners should visit the transport department’s official website and book an advance appointment for HSRP installation.Sarnaik further said, “Vehicles whose owners have not installed HSRP or registered an appointment within the deadline will be subjected to a special inspection drive on roads from July 1, 2026. Action will be taken against violators under the Motor Vehicles Act and compounding fees of up to Rs 1,000 will be levied.”The minister appealed to vehicle owners to register for HSRP only through the official website and not fall prey to any unauthorised persons or agents.Ends
