India head coach Amol Muzumdar admitted that the side will need to re-strategise its T20 game after it exited the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a loss to Australia.
On Sunday at Lord’s, the Women in Blue were condemned to a six-wicket defeat after they failed to defend 170. Harmanpreet Kaur and Co. failed to go past the group stage for the second edition in a row.
“I think we have to rethink our strategy, our T20 game. We really need to put our heads around what combination we are going to play,” Muzumdar told reporters after the match.
“I guess it was a par score. We had the momentum towards the end of the innings, and I think we carried it on the field as well. It’s just that at the end of the day, I think Australia was a better side than us,” he added.
He also said not having off-spinner Shreyanka Patil available for selection for this match was bad. Shreyanka was ruled out of the tournament when she sustained an injury against the Netherlands.
“It didn’t help Shreyanka wasn’t here. She was probably one of our strikers, so it didn’t help with her missing out on half of the tournament. We really missed her in this game today. I think she could have made a difference on that pitch on this ground,” he said.
Muzumdar, who led the team to its maiden ICC title when it clinched last year’s ODI World Cup, revealed what the side needs to do going forward.
“We really need to think about our bowling and fielding. We also need to be a little aggressive with the bat, and we could have had maybe 15-20 runs as cushion (against Australia). But having said that, if you look at our bowling attack, it’s been very inexperienced as far as international cricket is concerned. I’ve said this before in previous press conferences that give us 18 months and this this attack would be a different one,” he signed off.
