Most people wait for the perfect opportunity to make a difference. They wait for funding, resources, or support. But Uttam Teron decided to start with what he had: a small cowshed, ₹800 in his pocket, and a determination to ensure that children in his community had access to education. More than two decades later, that simple decision has transformed hundreds of lives. What started as a classroom with just four children has grown into Parijat Academy, a non-profit school that now educates nearly 400 children from 20 villages across Assam. But behind this remarkable achievement lies a story of compassion, perseverance, and an unwavering belief that every child deserves a chance to learn.
A cowshed that became a classroom
In the early 2000s, Uttam Teron noticed a heartbreaking reality around him. Many children living in remote villages had little or no access to education. Poverty, distance, and lack of resources meant that countless young minds were being left behind. Instead of waiting for someone else to solve the problem, he decided to take action himself. In 2003, with just ₹800, he converted his family’s cowshed into a small classroom and invited children from nearby villages to come and learn. There were no fancy desks, smart boards, or modern facilities. There was only a teacher determined to make a difference and a few children eager to learn. “I turned the cowshed in my home into a classroom and started teaching them for free,” Uttam recalled. His mother became his biggest supporter. While Uttam taught the children, she prepared meals for them, ensuring they had something to eat while they studied. Together, they created more than a school; they created hope.
From four students to hundreds

What began with just four children slowly started gaining attention. Parents saw the positive impact education was having on their children and began sending more students to Uttam’s makeshift classroom. Word spread from one village to another. As the number of students grew, so did Uttam’s vision. Over the years, the small initiative evolved into Parijat Academy, a school dedicated to helping underprivileged children build a better future. Today, nearly 400 students from 20 villages receive education through the academy. For many of these children, the school represents opportunities that their families never had.
More than just books and exams
Uttam understood that education is not limited to textbooks and classrooms. He wanted his students to gain practical skills that could help them become independent and successful in life. Along with regular education, students at Parijat Academy are trained in computer skills, agriculture, weaving, sewing, sports, and other livelihood-related activities. These skills not only improve their confidence but also prepare them for real-world challenges. The goal is simple: to help children create brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
A mission that continues against all odds

Over the years, Uttam Teron’s work has received national recognition and several awards. His efforts have inspired people across the country and highlighted the importance of grassroots education. Yet despite the recognition, the journey has not been easy. Parijat Academy continues to rely heavily on donations and community support to operate and expand its reach. Every new student, classroom, and opportunity depends on people who believe in the mission. But Uttam remains committed to the cause that started it all.His story is a powerful reminder that meaningful change does not always begin with wealth or influence. Sometimes, it starts with a simple decision to help. A cowshed became a classroom. Four children became 400. And one man’s dream became a lifeline for an entire generation. In a world where many problems seem too big to solve, Uttam Teron proves that even the smallest act of kindness can create a lasting impact.
