Decapitated infra plagues historic Srikona ITI, MLA vows repair & revamp initiative

Silchar: The Govt Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Srikona — one of the oldest and most prestigious technical training hubs in Cachar and the Barak Valley — is currently battling severe administrative neglect and decaying infrastructure. The premier institute, established in 1957, operates under the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) and accommodates approximately 448 students across a diverse range of engineering and non-engineering trades. It is reportedly operating in a dilapidated state.Insiders said the workshop buildings have received zero timely maintenance over the years and are now on the verge of structural collapse. Adding to the crisis, high-value training machinery and equipment meant for hands-on student learning have suffered extensive damage due to the damp, unmaintained environment. The facility caters to crucial vocational professions like electrician, fitter, machinist, mechanic (motor vehicle), and draughtsman (civil), making the breakdown of its core infrastructure a major blow to local skill development.Prompted by growing anxiety among students, faculty, and residents regarding the unsafe and inadequate learning conditions, Barkhola MLA Kishore Nath recently conducted an official inspection of the Srikona ITI campus. During his visit, the legislator toured the decaying classrooms and compromised workshop units to assess the extent of the damage, and later held a detailed review meeting with the institute’s authorities.Acknowledging the institution’s rich legacy, MLA Nath expressed deep concern over its current state, stating that the visual evidence of neglect was far from concerning. He assured the faculty and the student body of immediate structural repairs and the modernisation of the campus.Nath also committed to formally raising the matter with the relevant govt departments in Dispur to secure the necessary funding and resources, aiming to restore the historic ITI to its former glory and ensure that the youth of the Barak Valley receive cutting-edge technical training.
