Bike robbery accused held in encounter in Azamgarh

Varanasi: Taking action in a bike theft case reported last month, Atrauliya police on Tuesday night conducted an encounter operation in which a 22-year-old man was arrested in an injured condition. Police also recovered the looted motorcycle, a country-made pistol, and cartridges from his possession.The injured man was identified as Ravi Mishra, a resident of Ambedkarnagar district. He sustained a bullet injury in his right leg below the knee and was sent to CHC Atrauliya for treatment.ASP (Rural) Chirag Jain said that three unidentified miscreants had stopped a man, identified as Bhanjay Singh, around 9 pm on May 18 near Rithiya village and looted his motorcycle and mobile phone. An FIR was registered at Atrauliya police station in this regard.On Tuesday night, Atrauliya police were conducting a checking operation to nab the accused. During this, they received information from an informer that a criminal involved in the robbery was heading from Madiyapar towards Bahradev temple on the looted motorcycle.Acting on the tip-off, the police team laid a cordon near Khaderupatti. When intercepted, the criminal opened fire on the police team while attempting to flee. In retaliatory action taken in self-defence, the accused was injured.During interrogation, he admitted that he, along with his associates, had carried out the robbery. The ASP said police teams are conducting raids to arrest the other accused involved in the case.
