In 1925, a bizarre border incident involving a runaway dog helped trigger a military clash between Greece and Bulgaria in one of history’s strangest real conflicts.

It sounds like the setup to a joke or an internet myth. A dog runs across a border. A soldier chases after it. Gunfire breaks out. Two countries nearly go to war.
But remarkably, something very close to that really happened.
The conflict later became known as the “War of the Stray Dog”, one of the strangest diplomatic crises of the 20th century.
The incident took place in October 1925 along the tense border between Greece and Bulgaria near the town of Petrich. Relations between the two countries were already extremely fragile after years of conflict in the Balkans, including the Balkan Wars and World War I. The region remained heavily militarized, and border skirmishes were common.
Then came the dog.
According to the most widely repeated version of events, a Greek soldier stationed near the border chased after his dog when it wandered into Bulgarian territory. Bulgarian sentries allegedly opened fire, killing the soldier. Some accounts suggest another Greek officer attempting to investigate was also shot.
The incident immediately escalated.
Furious Greek authorities accused Bulgaria of provoking violence and demanded punishment for those responsible. When tensions spiralled, Greece launched military action across the border near Petrich. Bulgarian forces mobilized in response, and fighting quickly spread across the frontier.
For several days, the two countries exchanged fire while civilians fled the area. According to historical accounts, dozens of people were killed or wounded during the clashes.
The situation alarmed Europe because the Balkans already carried a reputation as one of the continent’s most unstable regions. Only a decade earlier, tensions in the region had contributed to the outbreak of World War I.
This time, however, the crisis ended differently.
The League of Nations, the international organisation that was created after World War I to help prevent future wars, intervened rapidly. Investigators were dispatched, pressure was applied and both sides were urged to stop fighting. Greece eventually withdrew its forces and was later ordered to pay compensation to Bulgaria.
Over time, the strange trigger behind the conflict became far more famous than the actual military clash itself.
Historians today note that the dog was not truly the sole cause of the conflict. Greece and Bulgaria were already deeply hostile toward each other, and the border remained extremely volatile. The runaway dog simply became the spark that ignited tensions already waiting to explode.
Still, the story survived because of how absurd it sounded.
And perhaps that is why the “War of the Stray Dog” still fascinates people a century later.
Because it remains one of history’s strangest reminders that sometimes massive geopolitical crises can begin with something unexpectedly small, even a single dog running across the wrong border.
