Uttar Pradesh’s State Election Commission has published the final voter list for the upcoming Panchayat elections after a large-scale revision exercise that resulted in the addition of nearly 40 lakh new voters and the deletion of around 1.41 crore names.
The revision is being viewed as one of the most extensive clean-up exercises undertaken ahead of local body elections in the state. Every voter has also been assigned a unique nine-digit identification number for the first time, aimed at improving transparency and reducing duplication in electoral records.
According to officials, the names removed from the rolls largely belonged to deceased voters, people who had migrated from their villages, and duplicate entries identified during the verification process. The exercise was carried out across Uttar Pradesh’s rural areas in preparation for the Panchayat elections, which are expected to be held later this year.
The State Election Commission (SEC) said the revised voter list has significantly improved the accuracy of electoral records and will help ensure fair and transparent elections. Officials noted that the introduction of a unique nine-digit voter identification number for each elector will make it easier to track voter records and prevent multiple registrations.
The publication of the final electoral roll comes shortly after the tenure of gram pradhans across Uttar Pradesh ended on May 26, intensifying preparations for the next round of Panchayat polls. Election authorities have described the updated rolls as a critical step in ensuring smooth conduct of the elections.
State Election Commission officials said extensive door-to-door verification was carried out through local election staff and Booth Level Officers. The process involved identifying eligible new voters who had attained the age of 18, correcting errors in existing records, and removing ineligible names from the rolls.
“The objective was to prepare a clean and updated voter list so that every eligible citizen can exercise his or her democratic right,” an official associated with the revision exercise said. The official added that assigning a unique nine-digit number to every voter would strengthen the integrity of the Panchayat electoral database and make future revisions easier.
Election authorities maintained that the revision was conducted under a transparent process and followed prescribed procedures for inclusion, deletion and correction of names. Similar voter-list revision exercises have been undertaken in recent months across different electoral rolls in the state to remove duplicate, shifted and deceased voters from official records.
The scale of the latest Panchayat roll revision highlights the challenges of maintaining accurate voter databases in India’s most populous state. Uttar Pradesh has more than 75,000 gram panchayats and a vast rural electorate spread across 75 districts, making periodic verification exercises essential for the credibility of elections.
Political observers believe the updated voter list could have a significant impact on electoral outcomes at the village level, where contests are often decided by narrow margins. The addition of nearly 40 lakh fresh voters, many of them young electors, may alter local political equations in several districts. At the same time, the deletion of over 1.41 crore names is expected to reduce the scope for electoral irregularities arising from duplicate or outdated entries.
Officials have urged voters to verify their details in the final list and report any discrepancies to local election authorities. The revised rolls are available through the State Election Commission’s official platform and at designated local offices.
With the final voter list now in place, the focus is expected to shift to the announcement of the Panchayat election schedule, a crucial political exercise that will serve as a key test for major parties ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
