Punjab ASI shoots self after wife, son, pet dog | Amritsar News

An assistant sub-inspector of Punjab Police Tuesday allegedly killed himself with his service weapon hours after shooting his wife, son and a pet dog dead in Gurdaspur, officials said.

After killing his family members, ASI Bhupinder Singh abducted a woman eyewitness at gunpoint while fleeing to his relative’s residence at a village near Batala. Though, police managed to rescue the woman, the ASI allegedly shot himself.

According to sources in the police, the ASI was in strained relationship with his wife, a teacher, as he wanted her to shift to Batala but she had refused.

ASI Bhupinder Singh, who was posted at DIG office in Amritsar, had returned home on leave two days ago. On Tuesday, he killed his wife Baljit Kaur (40) and son Lovepreet Singh (17) with his service weapon at around 10 am in Bhumbli village of Gurdaspur district. The ASI also shot dead his pet dog.

On hearing gunshots, a woman Swaran Kaur, a neighbour, reached the spot. While fleeing, the ASI, allegedly abducted the woman at gunpoint and took her to his relatives’ place at village Shahbad near Batala.

Batala Senior Superintendent of Police Ashwini Gotyal said they were successful in getting the woman released. Police also asked the ASI to surrender, she said, adding that he refused to come out.

Police broke into the room of the house after hearing gunshots and found that the ASI had shot himself. The ASI is survived by son Bhupinder Singh who lives abroad.

On January 29, a police constable Gursewak Singh, posted in Punjab’s Ferozepur cantonment area police station, had shot a woman colleague Amandeep Kaur before turning the gun on himself.

Last year on March 19, a constable Simranjit Singh, posted in Ludhiana, had used his service revolver to shoot a woman with whom he was in a live-in relationship. Later, he had tried to die by suicide but survived.
