After AI, Sam Altman and Elon Musk headed for a new battle as OpenAI Robotics hiring starts

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman appears to be setting the stage for a new competition with Elon Musk, this time in the fast-growing field of humanoid robots. In an X post, Sam Altman announced that OpenAI Robotics is hiring engineers to help build and manufacture robots designed to assist people in the physical world. The move expands OpenAI’s ambitions beyond artificial intelligence software and into robotics, an area where Elon Musk’s Tesla is already developing its Optimus humanoid robot.

OpenAI looks beyond AI software

In the post, Sam Altman wrote OpenAI Robotics is looking for “exceptional full-stack hardware, ops, systems, and ML engineers” to help develop robots that can be useful for society. “AI should be able to help people in the physical world,” Altman said.He said the company’s near-term focus is on building robots that can support skilled workers and help develop future infrastructure.“In the short term, we are focused on robots to support skilled workers to build our future infrastructure,” Altman said.Looking further ahead, Altman outlined a much broader vision for robotics.“In the long term, we imagine everyone having a personal robot doing anything they need,” he wrote.

Here’s what OpenAI Sam Altman wrote in X post

OpenAI Robotics is hiring, looking for exceptional full-stack hardware, ops, systems, and ML engineers to help us program and manufacture robots that are useful for society.AI should be able to help people in the physical world. In the short term, we are focused on robots to support skilled workers to build our future infrastructure; in the long term, we imagine everyone having a personal robot doing anything they need. Our world simulation research program, led by Aditya Ramesh (@model_mechanic), has evolved over the past year into OpenAI Robotics. Progress is rapid, and based on a foundation of co-design between robotics hardware and ML research. If you love working hands-on across the robotics stack and want to build the future, please consider joining us.
