Jamtara Pregnant Woman Miscarriage: Probe Ordered After Alleged Doctor Absence at Sadar Hospital

Dumka: Health authorities in Jamtara district have ordered a probe after family members of a 25-year-old pregnant woman alleged that she had to be shifted to a private facility from the Sadar hospital on Saturday night as there was no doctor available in the govt facility to attend to her. The woman suffered a miscarriage at the private clinic on Sunday, the family members alleged.Preeti Hansda, of Kelahi village under Mihijam police station limits, was taken to the Sadar hospital around 10 pm on Saturday after she started bleeding from the abdomen, sources quoting family members said.According to family members, they completed admission formalities, obtained a bed and repeatedly requested medical help, but no doctor attended her through the night. They alleged that nurses and other staff expressed inability to administer medicines or injections without a prescription from the doctor. As the bleeding continued, the woman’s condition allegedly worsened. The family claimed that even by 7 am on Sunday, no doctor had arrived, prompting them to shift her to the clinic in Mihijam. Doctors there reportedly performed an abortion and her condition was stated to be critical.Jamtara civil surgeon Dr Shiv Prasad Mishra said an inquiry has been ordered into the incident.“Preliminary investigation suggests that the woman’s family didn’t allow the available male doctor to go ahead with required treatment and were adamant on a female doctor to treat her,” Mishra said, adding that appropriate action would be taken if anyone is found accountable after investigation.Social activists Aqib Javed Khan and Samanat Marandi blamed the miscarriage on the delay in treatment and questioned healthcare services in the district. They alleged that despite Jamtara being the constituency of health minister Irfan Ansari, the Sadar hospital lacks basic emergency facilities and adequate number of doctors.
