Mysuru: The department of school education and literacy has introduced artificial intelligence (AI) education for Class 9 students in 20 govt schools in Chamarajanagar district from the current academic year, marking a significant step towards preparing students for a technology-driven future.The initiative is aimed at equipping students with an early understanding of AI and emerging technologies, while helping build a future-ready workforce capable of meeting the demands of the digital economy.Recognising AI as a transformative force shaping everyday life and industries, the state govt has introduced the subject as an elective option in schools. In the first phase, AI education is being rolled out for students from Classes 9 to 12. The curriculum will cover the fundamentals of artificial intelligence, robotics, digital tools and intermediate-level training.To support the programme, the department has directed district officials to establish the required laboratory facilities and infrastructure. It has also initiated the recruitment of 1,642 instructors under the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) scheme to teach AI in govt schools across the state.In Chamarajanagar district, AI has been introduced as an elective subject for Class 9 students in 20 selected high schools, including PM Shri and Karnataka Public Schools (KPS). Students can choose AI instead of Hindi as their third-language subject. Those who do not wish to opt for AI may continue studying Hindi.Chamarajanagar deputy director of school education and literacy Chandra Patil told TOI that the department has authorised schools to appoint guest faculty to teach the subject. Selected candidates will be engaged for 11 months and paid a monthly remuneration of Rs 20,000.AI experts can apply for vacanciesCandidates who have completed bachelor in computer applications, BSc computer science, BSc IT, diploma in computer science or diploma in information technology can apply to teach artificial intelligence education. Engineering graduates specialised in artificial intelligence, computer science and IT are also applying for these jobs.Patil said the headmasters were given powers to select a candidate of their choice and recommend the candidate to teach artificial intelligence education from this year, he said.Block education officer Maraiah said that govt had initiated measures for the appointment of candidates to teach artificial intelligence. The department has also started to receive applications for the post from applicants. They will be deputed soon, he said.
