A senior DMK leader has triggered a fresh controversy in Tamil Nadu by launching a personal attack on Chief Minister and TVK supremo Vijay, questioning the absence of his estranged wife and children at his swearing-in ceremony.

DMK MLA Anitha Radhakrishnan took aim at Vijay while addressing party workers in Thiruchendur. “You [Vijay] said you will protect women, but first respond to your wife and child. When you took oath as CM, did your wife or child attend?” he said.

Vijay was sworn in as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister after TVK pulled off a stunning victory over the ruling DMK in the Assembly polls. The actor-turned-politician’s grand oath ceremony in Chennai was attended by his parents, Shoba Chandrasekhar and SA Chandrasekhar, along with close friends, party leaders and supporters.

However, Vijay’s wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, and their two children were conspicuous by their absence. Actor Trisha Krishnan, Vijay’s rumoured girlfriend, was present at the ceremony and it quickly became a talking point.

Sangeetha had filed for divorce from Vijay in February after 27 years of marriage, citing infidelity and mental distress. According to court filings, she said the early years of their marriage were “happy and peaceful” but alleged that problems emerged in 2021 after she learnt of Vijay’s alleged extramarital relationship with an actress.

‘TVK GOVERNMENT WON’T LAST 6 MONTHS’

Radhakrishnan also predicted that the TVK government would collapse within months.

“TVK govt will not last beyond six months,” he said, expressing confidence that DMK president MK Stalin would return as Chief Minister “in four to six months”.

The former Tamil Nadu minister said his party wants Stalin to contest from the Trichy East constituency, which Vijay vacated after winning from both Trichy East and Perambur in the election. Vijay later chose to retain Perambur.

Radhakrishnan also lashed out at voters in Kolathur, where Stalin suffered a shock defeat to TVK candidate VS Babu. Stalin had represented the constituency since 2011.

“We have placed a resolution for our Thalapathy to contest in Trichy (East). He turned his constituency into Singapore but those disgusting treacherous people!” the DMK leader said.

TVK’s victory marked one of the biggest political upsets in recent Tamil Nadu history. The party won 108 seats with 34.92 per cent vote share, emerging as the single largest party in a state long dominated by the Dravidian giants — DMK and AIADMK.
