Hubballi: Stagnant rainwater accumulated across Hubballi over the past few weeks has turned into breeding grounds for mosquitoes, raising fears of mosquito-borne diseases among residents. Citizens have blamed the situation on alleged negligence by officials of the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC), claiming that timely preventive measures have not been taken despite continuous rainfall.Residents said pools of water have formed in several localities after repeated spells of rain, with little effort to drain the water or treat mosquito-prone areas. They pointed to vacant sites where water has collected and vegetation has grown unchecked, creating ideal conditions for mosquito breeding.

In some neighbourhoods, open plots have virtually turned into mini-jungles, worsening the problem.During an HDMC general body meeting in May, officials were directed to strengthen mosquito-control measures and equip all zonal offices with fogging and spraying machines. Corporator Najeer Honyal alleged that these directions have not been implemented effectively. He said that despite daily rainfall in Hubballi, there has been no regular fogging or spraying activity in many wards.Although civic authorities had earlier assured strict action to clear open sites and undertake ward-wise spraying and fogging, residents said the promised measures are yet to materialise. They claimed that nearly a month into the rainy season, no effective steps have been taken to curb mosquito-borne diseases.Residents of Anand Nagar, Gudihal Road, Old Hubballi, Tarihal, Keshwapur extension areas, Gokul Road and other localities expressed concern over the health impact, particularly on children and senior citizens. Many said they have been forced to rely on mosquito repellents, nets and other preventive measures while awaiting civic intervention.Social activist Umesh Sushi urged HDMC to immediately launch fogging and spraying drives, clear overgrown open sites and address waterlogged areas. HDMC Commissioner Rudresh Ghali said several complaints had been received and officials have been directed to take immediate action. “Fogging and spraying measures will be initiated,” he said.
