Two sons held for hacking scrap shopowner

T’puram: Naruvamoodu police on Saturday arrested two brothers in connection with attempted murder of a 55-year-old scrap shopowner, who was allegedly hacked by his estranged wife and two sons at his shop last month.The arrested were identified as Shivakumar (29) and his younger brother Harikrishnan (23), of Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. The duo had been staying at Sreepadam house near Karakulam village office in Thiruvananthapuram.According to police, the incident occurred on June 26 at the victim Murugan’s scrap shop at Naruvamoodu. Murugan had been living separately from his wife Selvi following marital disputes.

After carrying out the assault, the accused fled the scene on a motorcycle before locals could intervene.The case was registered based on a complaint lodged by Murugan’s brother-in-law, Irulappan. Police said the probe led to identification of accused, following which the two brothers were tracked down and arrested. Officers said efforts are continuing to trace and arrest Selvi. Police are also examining the circumstances that led to the attack, with preliminary findings indicating that long-standing family disputes were behind the assault.
