2 held with Rs 24L in Ghaziabad, ‘hawala’ link suspected

Ghaziabad: Two persons were arrested with unaccounted cash worth Rs 24 lakh in the Link Road area on Saturday night.Rashid and Suhail — originally from Meerut, who currently reside in Mustafabad and Bhagirathi Vihar areas, respectively — were caught at the Delhi-Ghaziabad border. Sahibabad ACP Amit Saxena said they could not provide a “satisfactory explanation”. Police have not registered any case, while GST and income tax (IT) officials are questioning them.“They were unable to provide any satisfactory answers regarding the cash found in their possession — including whose money it was, where they were taking it, why they were carrying it and why they were transporting it so late at night. When they were brought to the Link Road police station for questioning and their phone records were checked, it was revealed that they previously conducted several similar hawala transactions,” he said.“Their phones also revealed information about 10 GST firms, of which nine are registered in Delhi and one in Haryana, through which multiple instances of GST fraud have been committed. The GST department and the IT department have already been informed,” Saxena said.
